From Heartbreak to Hope: The Manuel Family’s Journey

Some journeys don’t go as planned, and for the Manuel family, theirs became one they’ll never forget. In 2021, what started as a joyful family vacation in Curaçao turned into a story of resilience, love, and an unexpected new beginning.

Kelly and her husband had traveled to Curaçao so she could finally personally meet her in-laws and enjoy some quality family time together. Kelly was 25 weeks pregnant, and the trip was filled with excitement and anticipation. But just days into their vacation, Kelly began experiencing contractions. Despite every effort to stop early labor, baby Shenaiya arrived in Curaçao at just 26 weeks old.

What followed was a long, uncertain stay in the NICU at Curaçao Medical Center, made even harder by the reality of the moment. Curaçao was once again facing a rise in COVID-19 cases, and strict hospital protocols were in place. Dad wasn’t allowed to visit at all, and Mom could only be at Shenaiya’s side for two hours a day.

For two new parents who had just welcomed their daughter into the world far from home, it was heartbreaking.

Fast-forward to 2026, the Manuel family returned to our Family Room, and this time, their story looked very different. They were pleasantly surprised and moved to see just how much had changed within the hospital, thanks in large part to Ronald McDonald House’s continued push for Family Centered Care. Today, the NICU is open 24 hours a day, giving parents the comfort of being by their child’s side whenever they’re needed most.

For the Manuels, coming back wasn’t just a visit. It was a full-circle moment, and a beautiful reminder of why this care means everything.
